Franklin Furnace, originally located at 112 Franklin Street, was founded by performance artist Martha Wilson for the "preservation and presentation of avant-garde art" and soon became a major archive for artists' books. In addition Franklin Furnace presented exhibitions, and works by performance artists. [Note: The Museum of Modern Art acquired the artists' book collection and related ephemera compiled by Franklin Furnace in 1994]. Presently the Franklin Furnace exists as a site on the internet.
